Health and Well Being June Articles
Traditional migraine treatment is not an appealing option for many people. It is completely understandable that some people don’t like the idea of doctors, strange medications, and adverse side effects. It only makes sense that alternative therapies have been becoming more and more popular amongst migraine sufferers. Many times these therapies can be just as effective as medical treatment, and sometimes they are even more so. This means that you may never have to pop a pill again.
Even if you are considering other methods of treatment, it is best to contact your doctor as he or she will be able to provide guidance. Most doctors have realised the potential that many alternative treatments. Acupuncture has been recognised by the World Health Organisation to be effective in treating over 30 medical conditions. Results have also been said to last for as long as several months. Other treatments (such as massage and aromatherapy) have received acclaim from migraine sufferers for their abilities, but there is little medical support. This does not mean that they are without value, however.
Promising treatments have included nutritional and herbal supplements, and hormone therapy in women. Nutritional supplements support the theory that deficiencies in the body are responsible for migraines. In many cases, taking supplements (such as magnesium or fish oil) can not only reduce migraines, but also improve general health. A blood test may reveal any serious nutritional deficiencies in the body. Some herbal supplements have also shown some promise, but little is know about the actual medical effectiveness. Of interest for women is Propranolol hormone migraine treatment. Many women suffer migraines that are related to their menstrual cycles. Propranolol is actually a beta-blocker prescribed for heart disease, but also treats migraines. It is administered every day, but does not have to be taken in pill form. It is unknown why Propranolol is effective in treating hormonal migraines, but it can prevent other types as well.
If you belong to the growing number of migraine sufferers who are looking for new methods of treatment, consult your doctor before you jump into anything. Alternative methods of treatment are often not monitored as traditional medicine is. “Alternative” does not always mean “better”.
