Modern medicine and research tells us that smoking cigarettes and the illnesses that smoking causes are the leading cause of death in the West. Several different cancers, from lung to mouth and throat cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and heart disease all have links to smoking tobacco. In the 60s and 70s there was quite a bit of noise regarding the dangers of tar and nicotine. This was during a time before medicine found that tar was in fact a vasoconstrictor which restricts the blood flow and oxygen in the body, and before it was found that nicotine was highly addictive, it is the other 4,000 dangerous chemicals we need to look at more, like arsenic (which is a poison) and carbon monoxide (Which comes out of your car engine). There are literally hundreds of products on the market today that make claims to be the best way to quit smoking. The problem is that there isn’t just one product that is the best way to stop smoking. A smoker has got two separate addictions, one being to the nicotine and other is a mental habit of smoking after specific events. Normally the physical addiction to nicotine will last [...]

There are many myths surrounding alcohol and it is quite important to be able to separate these alcohol myths from alcohol fact. One of the most prevalent myths surrounding alcohol is that alcohol intake kills your brain cells. The fact of the matter, however, is that there are no proven medical studies that can support this claim. The closest that alcohol can get to killing your brain cells is by facilitating the rapid development of some types of degenerative diseases that attack the brain. As far as killing your brain cells directly is concerned, about the only way that alcohol can do this is if you drink pure alcohol, which can definitely kill neurons as well as almost any other types of living cells or if you pour alcohol directly on an exposed brain, during which, alcohol killing your brain cells might be the least of your worries. There are, however, some very real effects of alcohol on the human body which should take precedence over these unfounded alcohol myths. For example, it is a fact that excessive alcohol intake can kill. This happens when the body succumbs to alcohol poisoning or acute alcohol intoxication, which is the direct result [...]

The aim of drug detoxification is to rid the body of toxins that build up by drug use. The first step of drug detoxing is drug withdrawal. The meaning of withdrawal is to discontinue the use of an addictive substance, and to break the physiological and mental readjustment that accompanies such discontinuation. Basically, once you stop using drugs, the physical and behavioral withdrawal symptoms may follow. The nature and harshness of the withdrawal symptoms can vary greatly depending on the particular drug or drugs that were being used as well as the frequency of use. These days there are few people who use one drug exclusively. It is very ordinary to see individuals in drug detoxification programs that use combinations like alcohol and cocaine, or alcohol and prescription medications for example. Drug detox is a method that applies to any individual who is addicted to substances. Detoxification helps reduce the uncomfortable symptoms of drug withdrawal. This can be performed in many different ways depending on how you decide to receive treatment. Most drug detoxification centers simply provide management to avoid physical withdrawal to alcohol and other drugs. Ideally, a trained detoxification facility will incorporate counseling and therapy during their drug [...]

Health and WellBeing Looks at Codeine Withdrawal In the area of impact on human body, line between medicine and poison is very vague. If to use higher concentration of the substance, which, in minimal doses is an excellent drug against a disease, it may become a popular drug. Learning how to provide all the new derivatives of opium, chemists and pharmacologists have unwittingly contributed to the spread of opiate addiction. So, in 1803 in Germany from the opium poppy has been received morphine, which is 10 times more powerful than the opium. At the end of the XIX century German physician Heinrich Drezer (who, incidentally, was first who used aspirin) synthesized on the basis of the new chemical compound morphine a new drug. It was codeine. Codeine at first was enthusiastically adopted by the pharmacists. It has been used for pain relief from cough. Codeine is weaker than morphine however, it causes physical dependence. Of course, codeine is much weaker, than, for example heroin. It evokes a feeling of bliss, which is soon replaced by a sense of well-being, security. But it turned out that physical dependence on this drug at 91 of people, started to use it, occurs in [...]

Lately, scientists have been looking into the long term effects about smoking weed. For those who are considering marijuana rehabilitation, it is always best to get as much information about your addiction as possible. Recently, as accounted in a study comparing smoking cessation in adults who smoked both tobacco and marijuana with those who smoked only tobacco, scientists found that the relationship between marijuana use and continued smoking was particularly strong in those who smoked marijuana daily at the time of the original interview, thirteen years prior to the follow up interview. In a study of close to 500 individuals, they found that people who smoked marijuana frequently but do not smoke tobacco have more health problems and miss more days of work than nonsmokers do. They also discovered that many of the extra sick days used by the marijuana smokers in the study were for respiratory illnesses. The key to conquering any addiction, and to find your way to marijuana rehab is to understand just what all those years of drug abuse might have done to your body. It seems that cancer of the respiratory tract and lungs may also be advanced by marijuana smoke. A study comparing cancer [...]
